Maria Burgos ("Nery Nevarez"), a humble servant of the Lord, walked into the embrace of our Heavenly Father on March 5, 2024, at the age of 105 in Weston, Florida. Born on May 19, 1918, in Puerto Rico, her life was a testament to the virtues of faith, love, and tireless dedication to her family and the less fortunate.
Embracing the Christian call to serve, Maria became a Certified Nurse Assistant at the age of 55, a role she fulfilled with selfless love until her retirement at 70 to care for her beloved husband, Antonio Burgos, who preceded her in death. Her devoted care was a silent sermon on the reverence of marriage and the sanctity of human life, reflecting Maria's respect for all of God's creation.
Her generosity extended beyond the walls of her home into her community, where she lived out her faith-filled existence, grateful for everyday blessings and the opportunity to serve others. Maria cultivated a garden of joy within her heart that flourished in the presence of her family and friends, nurturing it with the same loving kindness she offered to every soul she encountered.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and the fruits of her faith in her daughter, Maritza Cortes; son-in-law, Sigifredo "Pete" Cortes; grandchildren, Lorraine and Anthony Cortes; and great-granddaughter, Isabelle Antonia Cortes, who will continue to walk in the light of her example.
The family of Maria invites those who have been touched by her love to gather in remembrance and celebration of her journey to eternal peace. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., with a Celebration of Life to commence at 12:00 P.M. at Fred Hunter’s Hollywood Memorial Garden Home, 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood.
Fred Hunter Funeral Home, situated at 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida 33024, has been entrusted with Maria's final arrangements, honoring her wish to guide her loved ones towards a path of gratitude and remembrance as we bid her an earthly farewell and a spiritual Godspeed.
