Mark was born November 27, 1966, in Hollywood, FL, the son of Bonnie and Paul O’Loughlin. His younger brother Keith arrived a few years later. After a short time in Hollywood, the O’Loughlin Family moved to Pembroke Pines, where Mark would continue to reside the rest of his life. During his childhood in Pembroke Pines, he formed many life-long friendships. Whether it was playing paddleball at the neighborhood park, riding bikes up to “Top Banana,” or playing football at Pasadena Optimist, Mark thoroughly enjoyed his new community.
Some of Mark’s most precious childhood memories formed over the summers when Bonnie would take Mark and Keith for multi-week summer vacations every year. As a business owner and working single mom after her divorce to Mark’s father, Bonnie took advantage of the yearly summer dip in patrons to close the business for several weeks and turn the month into an annual summer road-trip ritual filled with exciting new lands and attractions. Each year, they would traverse the United States. From The Golden Gate Bridge to Mount Rushmore, from the Grand Canyon to Yellowstone National Park, from Gettysburg to the Alamo Taking in the vast country and history left a huge impression on Mark. Over the years, Mark and his family would visit 47 of America’s 50 states (leaving only Hawaii, Alaska and North Dakota), an accomplishment Mark was very proud of.
As a part of the summer road trips, the family typically stopped each year in Variesburg, New York, outside of Buffalo, to spend time with family since both of his parents were born in the area. The long summer days were spent hanging out with cousins, staying cool playing in area creeks and picking wild raspberries. Mark and his brother Keith were always very close, but these summer road trips created the ultimate bond.
When fall rolled around, That love of football, fueled by a lifetime as a Miami Dolphins fan, would eventually lead him to the role he cherished most: coach. it was time for football. Mark and Keith were actively involved in the football and baseball programs at Pasadena Optimist, playing for many years at one of South Broward's most respected youth sports organizations. The teams were outstanding, and the coaching was second to none. There, Mark gained the fundamentals of the game along with an appreciation for great coaching—lessons he would later draw on as a coach himself.
Mark went on to attend Cooper City High School, where he would expand his network of devoted long-lasting friendships, especially the ultra-local 93rd Avenue crew (IYKYK). His art classes at Cooper City became pivotal. His natural talent emerged and he cultivated a passion for what would become his future career. (This is also the class where he got to know his future wife, Genie).
After graduating from Cooper City, he went on to attend and graduate from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. After a few early jobs as a pre-print artist, Mark began working for himself in the late 90s and never looked back. He incorporated as “Trademark Graphics” in 2001. He thrived for many years at a time when being self-employed was not common, and continued to run his business more than 25 years until earlier this year. He did graphic design and printing work for a wide variety of South Florida businesses, chambers of commerce, and numerous local and regional political candidates and causes.
After dating briefly twice before (including one date in high school), Mark reconnected with Genie in 2005. The “third time was the charm” and the two were married in 2012. While the couple never had children, they served as proud pet parents to many fur babies, including Elvis the German Shepherd.
Mark was first drawn into becoming active in the community through the American Cancer Society’s local Relay for Life in Cooper City, where several friends and family were volunteering. In addition to other duties, his booming speaking voice and enthusiasm for the limelight made him a natural fit as the event’s emcee for many years.
Motivated by a deep love for his city and the area he grew up in, he began getting involved in a number of other community organizations, such as Kiwanis and the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce. The more he got involved, the more he loved helping his community. He was soon being named to serve on various local committees, including the powerful Facilities Task Force for the School Board of Broward County and the Pembroke Pines Economic Development Board. He was appointed by Florida Governor Rick Scott to the Broward County Housing Authority, where he served many years, including several terms as the Board Chair. He approached each role with passion and commitment.
His commitment to serve the community drew him into the realm of elected politics, supporting a number of local and regional candidates and mounting two campaign runs for his district’s Pembroke Pines city commission seat. Though ultimately unsuccessful, he never lost his passion for wanting to help his neighbors and he remained a strong local advocate, frequently helping his neighbors navigate the resources or accountable parties at the city.
But it was not until Mark started coaching flag football that he would find his true joy. He got his start helping at Flanagan High School coaching ladies Flag Football, then later returning to his Alma Mater to coach ladies Flag Football at Cooper City, before joining the crew as a dedicated coach at Posnack Day School coaching both boys middle school and men’s high school Flag Football. His passion for the game was undeniable and he imparted that enthusiasm to all his kids. He truly loved the students he coached and formed strong bonds with the players on all his teams. He became emotional at the end of every season and deeply appreciated every thank you card he ever received. He made a huge impression on his students, but they left an equally obvious impact on him as well. He found the place where his light shone brightest, and it was with the kids.
Mark is survived by his wife, Genie O’Loughlin, mother Bonnie O’Loughlin, father Paul O’Loughlin, brother Keith O’Loughlin, aunt Sue Murdock, uncles Andrew and Alan Murdock, along with numerous cousins, who he loved very much.
