With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Mabel Chambers Hue, 88 years old, of Mandeville, Manchester, Jamaica, who entered into eternal rest peacefully at sundown on Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, in Hollywood, Florida.

Mary Mabel was born in Mandeville, Manchester, in May of 1938, one of eight children. She did her schooling in Mandeville and, as a young woman, moved to the big city of Kingston to work as a hairdresser. It was there that she met and married our father, and together they had two children. Her life became a story of devotion and quiet courage. She traveled to Canada to work as a homemaker and nanny for several years before returning home to Jamaica. Encouraged by her elder sister, she then set out for New York, working and providing for her children from afar until at last she was able to bring them to live with her in the United States, where she encouraged them to grow and flourish. In time she settled in Florida, when the cold weather finally became too much to bear.

Mary’s joys were simple and true. She had a love of shoes, and she took pride in sewing her own church dresses, often turning out a proper Sunday dress by her own hand. She loved to bake bread, and she was famous for her Jamaican fruit cake, the Christmas kind, made with red wine and lifted heavy with raisins. It was, by all accounts, perfection, though her family will admit with a smile that it did not quite pass down to the next generation. She found quiet contentment in reading her Bible, and now and then in an afternoon spent with the Hallmark Channel.

A spirited woman, Mary could make friends in a moment and laugh easily with strangers. She was a cancer survivor, and she met life’s challenges with the same grace she brought to its joys. Her days had a gentle rhythm she loved: a morning walk, fresh juices made by her own hand, tending the fruit trees and flowers in her garden, and time spent with her son and two grandchildren. She kept up a friendly, ongoing rivalry with the neighborhood squirrels over the mangoes and the pear that grew in her yard, a competition she took in good humor. She shared her joy freely with her neighbors, many of whom came to call on her, drawn by her warmth.

Above all, Mary was a devout Catholic. Her faith was not something she wore on Sundays and set aside; it was the quiet architecture of her whole life. She was a faithful member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Fort Lauderdale and St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Miramar. Those who knew her knew she could not bring herself to throw away a church bulletin. They gathered on tables and in drawers, in her Bible and her purse, each one a small keepsake of a Mass attended and a prayer offered. It is from those carefully saved bulletins that her family came to know her most beloved passages, the Psalms she returned to again and again: the searching wonder of “O Lord, you have searched me and known me,” the quiet counsel of “Be still before the Lord and wait,” the lifelong trust of “In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge,” the cries of “How long, O Lord” and “My soul thirsts for you,” the comfort of “You are my hiding place,” the wonder of “Come, let us sing,” and the trust of “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” They were the songs of her heart, and now they are her family’s inheritance of her.

Above all else, Mary cherished her family. As a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt, she created a lifetime of treasured memories through her warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love. Whether sharing a story, offering encouragement, or simply being present, she had a remarkable way of making everyone feel valued and deeply loved. She taught those around her the importance of faith, forgiveness, and the simple beauty of caring for one another, and her legacy lives not only in the lives she touched but in the values she passed on through her example.

Mary was preceded in death by her sister Lena Rowe, her brother James Chambers II, and her sister Edna Shand.

She leaves to cherish her memory her two children, Roger Hue and Avril Hue; her sister, Dorothy Chambers; her grandchildren, Jullian Hue and Joshua Hue; her nephews Derrick Shand, Kirvin Shand, Trevor Rowe, Mervin Rowe, Conrad Rowe, Philip Chambers, and James Chambers III; and her nieces Heather Chambers, Kasey Chambers, and Sandra Chambers, along with a wide circle of extended family and faithful friends who loved her dearly.

The family of Mary Mabel Chambers Hue wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the friends and family of the faithful; to Father Linus of St. Anthony Catholic Church; to Father Peter of St. Bonaventure, Davie; to Father Andrew Chan-A-Sue, Pastor of St. Bartholomew; to Father Youry Jules of St. Bartholomew, Miramar; to St. Anthony Catholic Church and St. Bartholomew Catholic Church; and to the nurses at Memorial Regional Hospital for their compassionate care.

Though our hearts are broken by her passing, we take comfort in knowing that Mary’s faithful journey has led her home to the loving embrace of our Lord. Her love, her faith, and the beautiful example of her life will remain with us always.
