

Monica is survived by her son Ty Edwards, daughter-in-law Alison Ekizian and granddaughter Eve Edwards; daughter Tawanna Edwards and son-in-law Martin Ross; daughter Turcessa Haigney and granddaughter Samantha Haigney; her sister Madonna Koenekamp; and other family members who were very dear to her. Monica was preceded in death by her husband Richard; parents Peter and Marian Weiland; and her sister Veronica Merrill.
Monica was born in Sioux Falls, SD and grew up on a farm with her sisters, all three of whom were named after Catholic saints. In 1959, Monica moved to South Florida and in 1961, graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Around this time, Monica met her future husband Richard Edwards, a service member in the U.S. Army, at a military dance at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale. They were married in 1962 and soon thereafter, started a family.
Richard went on to have a very successful career in the printing industry while Monica devoted her time to her greatest passion in life – her family. She enjoyed following her children’s and grandchildren’s athletic pursuits, which included tennis, cross-country and softball. Monica was an avid fan of all South Florida sports teams, especially the Florida Panthers. She also followed the athletic programs of Boston College and the University of Alabama - schools her children and granddaughter attended. Monica was devoted to her Catholic faith and a friend to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, her dedication to the people she loved and her willingness to help those in need.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 2023, from 1-5 PM at Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home, 2401 S University Drive in Davie, FL. The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, January 23, 2023, at 10 AM at St Bonaventure Catholic Church, 1301 SW 136th Ave, Davie, FL. It will be immediately followed by a graveside burial ceremony at Hollywood Memorial Gardens North, 3001 N 72nd Ave, Hollywood, Florida. Some of Monica’s favorite charities were the Wounded Warrior Project, Boys Town, Salesian Missions and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
