The Reverend Petunia Chung Segré aged 73 passed away peacefully on September 15, 2017 at her younger daughter's home in Fort Lauderdale. Petunia was born in Old Harbour Bay to the late Charles Chung and Mary Maragh. At the time of her departure, she was living in Browns Town, St. Ann, Jamaica and had been on an extended stay in Fort Lauderdale. Previous residences included Columbus, Ohio and Kingston, Jamaica.
"Candy," as she was affectionately termed, started schooling at Miss Ivy's then went on to Old Harbor Primary before she matriculated from St. Jago High School where she was one of two girls who were in the "academic top 10." She was a Prefect & a Girl Guide and managed to win a scholarship for science studies to the University of the West Indies. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Education and a Diploma in Education then emigrated years after to the United States where she earned her Master in Divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio. A lifelong servant of God she ministered to many through her roles as mother, school teacher, school shop proprietor, caterer, math tutor, social service worker with Vitas and with hospice, administrative support, hospital Chaplain, and eventually Pastor.
Her actions spoke volumes about her compassion for others as she volunteered often at the shelters, soup kitchens and was often working to feed the homeless, clothe the naked and teach children who had fallen behind in class. She led Bible Study and was quick to advise others on herbal remedies for a host of ailments and diseases. Moreover, she was dedicated and reliable in offering care to her husband in his final years.
Aunty Candy was a friend to nieces, nephews, daughters, neighbors and a host of surrogate children. She enjoyed laughing, crafts, gardening and flower arranging. Family was important and she sewed her daughters' clothes, bonded with them while she cooked in the kitchen and made sure that they were learning how to be responsible through chores. A stern disciplinarian she was also the "maverick" in figuring out mechanical problems as well as being a "scholarly woman."
Petunia is survived by sister Gloria Chung in Old Harbour, Jamaica; brother Steve Chung (Nellie) in Texas and daughters Lusanne Green (Hamilton Green) in Ohio, Marie Berlin (Peter Berlin) in Florida and grandchildren Hamilton Green, Lincoln Green, Sedera Green and Amira Green in Ohio as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Tony Segré (2015), brothers Wilbert (1985), Audley (1981) and Lesley (2006) Chung and sister Sylvia "Beryl" Chung (2011).
Memorial services followed by a repast will be held on October 1, 2017 beginning at 4p.m. at Merrell United Methodist Church, 3900 North State Road, Lauderdale Lakes, Florida 33319. All are welcome.
