

Elwyn Nimmons "Buck" Powell, Jr., 84 of Fort Lauderdale passed away on January 12, 2016. Buck was born in Newnan, GA to Elwyn N. Powell, Sr. and Nell Sams Worthy Powell on July 26, 1931. The Powells moved to south Florida in the 1920s. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years, Barbara R. Powell. Buck leaves behind his three children, Valerie C. Powell, Shelly L. Powell and Elwyn C. Powell; his sister Carolyn P. Myers, brother Richard S. "Dick" Powell, sister-in-law Toodie Powell, niece Diane Jain and a host of cousins.
He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1954 with Bachelors in Science and Architecture and was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. After college he served in the Army in the Engineering Corps in Europe working on rebuilding projects.
Buck worked as an architect for almost 5 decades on residential and commercial projects; including all the public schools that his children attended. Other buildings include Broward College's Bailey Hall, Beach Place, many expansions at Broward General and North Broward hospitals, and was consulting architect for First Baptist Church's transformation.
An avid sailor, Buck was a member of the Gulfstream Sailing Club. He raced inshore with his children and offshore with his friends on club races and occasionally the SORC circuit. He shared his enthusiasm for sailing with his kids and family friends. Later, he enjoyed sailing on his 36' catamaran. When he was younger, Buck was a member of the Tropical Sports Car Club and would drive his Porsche on rallies and traveled with the club to watch the 12 Hours of Sebring race.
He was a member of 1st Baptist Church for many decades. His long-time interest in solar energy resulted in a trip to China along with Barbara and the solar society. Buck had an inventive mind and enjoyed creating many projects. He was a skilled woodworker, metalsmith and photographer. We have lost a true southern gentleman.
