Whether you knew him as Dick, Dear, Dad or Pop-pop, you knew him as a wonderful
man who could make you smile with his deep Santa-like laugh or surprise you with a
joke when you least expected it. He was a man of incredible warmth, charm and
authenticity who treated everyone with kindness and respect and had a gift for making
everyone he met feel special.
Dick Sharkey peacefully surrendered to God on November 21, 2016 at his home in
Davie, FL with his loving wife, Therese Sharkey, by his side.
In his 82 years, Dick lived a full life and taught us all many things about service, strength,
style, love and loyalty.
He served his country in the US Military from 1955-1961. During that time he was called
to active service for two terms, witnessed atomic bomb testing and experimenting, and
was decorated with a Good Conduct Medal - Sharpshooter. After leaving the military,
he began serving his community as a barber in the Hollywood Mall Barber Shop, a
business he would later go on to co-own. As a skilled barber he provided a shave and a
haircut to some of the Hollywood's finest, like Earl Morrall and other famous Dolphins,
but he wasn't one to brag of course.
He was certainly a dapper gentleman in all regards-- he was always neatly pressed and
well put together (or as he'd say, looking sharp). He had cuff links and golf hats and
shoehorns and you'd be hard pressed to think of a time when he didn't have his shirt
tucked in. He was the type of man who took a shower BEFORE going to the gym and
never missed his 5 o'clock Manhattan.
In addition to a sharpshooter and a barber, Dick was many things--a loving, long-time
husband; a kind, hands-on father, and a strong provider for his family in every way; he
was a ballroom dance instructor; a civil rights supporter; a great storyteller; an avid
outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and golfer; a loyal Miami Heat fan and lover of all
things Florida sports; and he was always the head of our family dinner table.
As a grandfather to seven grandchildren, he epitomized everything a grandfather should
be--warm, funny, gentle, and genuine. He never let his lack of understanding of the
rules of a game stop him from playing and he always surprised us with his humor and
wit. He had a joke for every occasion and the perfect story for every moment.
We will always revel in the incredible, hilarious, joyous moments he brought to us all.
Here's to the loyal friend, dedicated husband, amazing dad and best grandfather anyone
could ask for. Cheers Pop-Pop, you'll always be at the head of our table.
He is reunited once again with his parents Leo and Helen Sharkey and his six siblings:
Tom, Harry, Jim, Sara, Helen, and Loretta.
Dick's incredible spirit is carried on by his loving wife of 47 years, Therese Marie
(O'Toole) Sharkey; his children Larry Sharkey, Craig Sharkey, Debbie Sharkey (Mike)
Stokes, Amy Sharkey Thompson, and Cindy Sharkey Summers; his grandchildren
Shannon (Doug) Loizzo, Amy Summers, Shannon Stokes (Johnny) McRae, Misty
Summers (Jonathan) Goheen, Daniel (Kelly) Summers, and Samantha Stokes; and great
grandchildren Kayla and DJ Loizzo, Aidan Boswell, and Harper Summers; as well as the
friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.
We will celebrate this wonderful man with a visitation on Friday, November 25 from
5:00-7:00pm at Fred Hunter Funeral, Hollywood, FL and a funeral mass on Saturday,
November 27 at 10:00 am at Saint David Catholic Church, Davie, FL.
In lieu of flowers, please continue Dick and Terry's dedication to service by donating to
Hope Outreach at 4700 SW 64 Ave, Suite A, Davie, FL 33314.
