Samuel Griffin was born on August 12, 1948, in Clio, Alabama, to Edgar Sr. and Annie Laura Griffin, who both preceded him in death. He attended primary and secondary schools in Alabama before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
At the age of 20, while on military leave, Samuel met the love of his life on a bus departing from Philadelphia. On April 6, 1974, he married Irene Kohn in Miami, Florida. From this union, two children were born: Samuel ("Chuckie") and Ebony ("Tissy"). Samuel was also the proud father of his son, Tyler.
Affectionately known as "Gene" or "Brother," Samuel loved the Lord with all his heart. He faithfully spent hours each day reading his Bible and lived a life grounded in his faith.
Samuel dedicated 38 years of service to the United States Postal Service, working in Special Delivery until his retirement in 2009. In addition to his postal career, he successfully owned and operated a lawn care business for over 20 years.
Samuel lived a full, happy, and rewarding life. He deeply loved his family and cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved. After a long illness, the Lord called him home on August 3, 2026. Before his passing, Samuel had made his peace with God and was comforted by the assurance of his salvation.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Irene Griffin; his children, Samuel II (Freeketa), Ebony, and Tyler; and a very special nephew, Sammie Lee Kohn Jr. (Kenetress), whom he raised as his own son. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren, Samoni and Samuel III, of whom he was immensely proud.
Samuel is also survived by his brothers, Edgar Griffin Jr. (Rachel), Joe Griffin (Monique), and Raymond White (Sarah). He was preceded in death by his brother, John Griffin. He also leaves his sisters, Annie Smith, Maeola Griffin, Joyce Eutsey (O.J.), Zelma Simmons (Johnnie), Edna Speaks (Michael), and Lillian Tisdale (David). He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Griffin.
He also leaves to cherish his memory three special sisters-in-law: Phyllis Hill (Ben), Deborah Kohn, and Esther Kohn. In addition, he leaves two very special cousins, Roscoe Threats and Alvin Griffin, whom he affectionately referred to as his brothers.
Samuel's legacy of faith, love, kindness, and devotion will continue to live on through the many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who were blessed to know and love him.
