Charles R. Crosley

A lifelong area resident, he was born August 25, 1923, the son of the late Ralph and Ella Knobel Crosley.

Upon his graduation in 1940 from Homer Academy, where he was voted “King of the Prom”, Jug enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, serving in the South Pacific in World War II, from 1941-1945.

He was a detective with the Cortland Police Dept for 4 years. Jug then began a 34 year career with the U.S. Post Office, first in Cortland, then transferring to the Homer Post Office, where he retired as Assistant Post Master in 1978.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, a member of the Marine Corp. League, member and Past Commander of the Burns-McCauliffe Post #465 American Legion of Homer.

Jug was a Life Member of the Homer Fire Department and proud member of the Hook & Ladder Co. He held many positions over the years, President, Assistant Chief and from 1969-1974 served as Department Chief.

Charlie’s greatest joy was his family, making “crooked” toys for the grandchildren, beating his kids in golf and working outside in the sun.

Surviving is loving wife of 68 years, Aletha Long Crosley; six children, Linda Sartwell of Mifflinburg, PA; James Crosley of Danbury, CT; Margaret (Paul) Sweeney of Homer; Michael (Anne) Crosley of South Colton, NY; Martin (Diane) Crosley of Marcellus, NY and Mary Laudermilk (Bob Fratamico) of McLean; 18 grandchildren, Dan (Heather), Doug (Chris), Shawn (Dawn), Jamie, Jennifer, Jon (Danielle), Peter (Karen), Thomas (Adria), Adam (Larissa), Amanda (Jason), Jake, Allison, Lauren, Patrick, Chris (Nikki), Kevin (Kimberlee), Nicholas (Erin) and Emily. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Gwen Crosley of Homer; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Charlie was predeceased by two brothers, John and Franklin Crosley and a sister, Rena Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in St. Margaret’s Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Paul J. Alciati. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5-8 p.m .at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 N. Main St., Homer.
