

Merle was born September 17, 1919 in Groton, a son of the late Arthur and Bessie Brown Homer.
He was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Air Force after five years of service and 22 years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Major. During World War II, Merle flew 35 missions out of Foggia, Italy as a bombardier and navigator on a B-17.
Merle was employed for New York Telephone for 35 years, retiring in 1980. In his spare time he enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, hunting, fishing and gardening.
Active in several civic organizations through the years, Merle was a member of the Cortland V.F.W., Moose, D.A.V., American Legion, Eagles and the Homer Elks.
Surviving are his two children, Alan (Joanne) Homer of Cortland and Cheryl (Andre) Chaslin of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Brian (Blake), Amy (Todd), Beth (Todd) and Chad (Renee) and four great grandchildren, Logan, Caleigh, Brody and Ethan.
He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma in 2002; two brothers, Richard and Dever Homer and a sister, Romaine Brown.
Memorial services will be delayed until spring. In keeping with Merle's wishes, there are no calling hours.
