Alexander O’Kane McCauley passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 37. Alex leaves behind countless heartbroken family and friends as a testament to a life that, while too short, was so well lived. Alex was born on February 20, 1987, in Anaheim, CA. He attended Servite High School and Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Orange County, CA. He followed his family’s legacy to attend the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and affectionately earned the nickname “Sunshine.” Alex and his wife Paula met in New Orleans and moved to Birmingham shortly thereafter, where he worked at Retail Strategies in commercial real estate and developed many close friendships.
Alex was known for his big heart, loyalty, trustworthiness and protective nature for those he loved. Laughter and love routinely filled the gatherings on his front porch in Forest Park, reflective of his open-mindedness and hospitable demeanor. Alex loved those around him deeply.
Alex is survived by his wife Paula, mother Mary Anne McAlpin, brother Stiles (Andrea), nephew, Colin, and niece, Hazel, half-brothers Robert, Matthew and Douglas, uncles Tip, Richard and Bruce McAlpin. Alex leaves behind his beloved Golden Retriever, Sully, and too many friends to count. Alex was lovingly welcomed into the arms of his father, Dr. Robert Frances McCauley, who Alex has missed for more than 20 years.
Visitation is Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 10:30 – 12:00 at Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 6th Avenue N, Birmingham, AL, 35203. The memorial service will begin at noon.
