Obituary of Ann Spicer Dodson
Margaret Ann Spicer Dodson, a beautiful lady, inside and out, went to the Lord on January 21, 2023, after a long and brave battle with cancer. Other than her family, gardening was her love, especially wildflowers, and for several years she led the care of Martha’s Garden at Canterbury Methodist Church. Ann was also a founding member of the Cherokee Rose Garden Club, and a camellia was named in her honor. She majored in mathematics and chemistry at Auburn University and was in Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. After graduation, she accepted a position at Southern Research Institute in the biochemistry department and helped put her husband through medical school. She excelled at creating intricate, lovely crewelwork for pillows and art to be enjoyed by future generations. Her embroidery of handkerchiefs used in church christenings was especially meaningful, and she loved seeing them used in church services. She was a loyal member of the Crawford Owen Sunday School Class for 40 years and found love and friendship there. Ann loved hiking the Canadian Rockies at Lake O’Hara Lodge and made many loyal friends on these trips. Bird watching was another strong interest, and she became quite involved and knowledgeable. Ann’s early morning walks in the Cherokee Bend neighborhood with a small group of close friends resulted in the nickname “Walkie-Talkies,” with the emphasis on the latter. Ann was born to Margaret Childs and Fletcher Hagood Spicer on July 30, 1937. She married William Herbert Dodson in 1960, and they shared 62 wonderful years together. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind a daughter, Margaret Lee Summersell, a son John William Dodson (Denise), and four grandchildren: James William Dodson, Kathryn Avery Dodson, Joseph Fletcher Dodson, and Cole Harrington Summersell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert M. Spicer. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2023, with a service to follow at 2:00 pm at Canterbury Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Martha’s Garden at Canterbury Methodist Church, 350 Overbrook Road, Mountain Brook, AL 35213, or to your favorite charity. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Dodson family.
