PACKARD, ANN SCHOONOVER Ann Schoonover Packard died Easter Sunday April 24, 2011 in Birmingham, AL. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on Nov. 21, 1923 to Frank S. Schoonover, Jr., M.D. and Ann Maurine S. Schoonover. She graduated with honors from Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA.. She married John Mallory Packard, a medical student, on June 15, 1944 in Fort Worth and helped support him through medical school and internship by working as a laboratory technician. Following her husband from Boston to New York City to Washington, D.C., she eventually settled in Pensacola, FL, where they remained for 22 years with the exception of a year in Boston during her husband's residency. The Packards moved to Birmingham in 1969. Raising a family of seven children while helping her husband at the office, attending PTA meetings, and participating in a variety of church and community activities kept Ann from being bored with life. In 1973, she welcomed the first of four foreign exchange students into her home. In 1979 they adopted their first exchange student, Krid Asvanon of Bangkok, Thailand. Mrs. Packard was a born manager and raised a large and loving family. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, travel, and gardening, and was well known as a hospitable hostess. She was a memorable role model of a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. Mrs. Packard was predeceased by her son Charles E, Packard and by her two sisters, Betty S. Schoonover and Jane S. Smith. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John M. Packard, four sons: Dr. Michael D. (Catherine) of Fairfax, VA; Dr. John M., Jr. ("Shaun") (Katherine) of Guntersville, AL; Krid Asvanon-Packard (Ann) of Bangkok, Thailand; and Frank S. (Molly) of Birmingham; and three daughters: Dr. Ann M. Packard (Dr. James Hudspeth) of New York, NY: Mary B. Packard; and Charlotte (Shawn) Manning, both of Birmingham. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. The family appreciates the fine care she received from the staff of the Memory Care Unit at Brookdale Place and is especially grateful for many years of loving and faithful support by Patricia Lewis. A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Vestavia Hills, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 7, 2011 with visitation with the family following the service. Her ashes will be committed to the columbarium at Christ Episcopal Church, Pensacola, FL at a later date. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's of Central Alabama, P.O. Box 2273, Birmingham, AL, 35201, or to the disaster relief agency of your choice.
