

Mrs. Anne Shook Peyton died August 20, 2013. Born in Tarboro, North Carolina on April 2, 1920, she had lived in Birmingham since 1948. She was a founder of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, in which she remained a member throughout her life. She was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, Montcrest Garden Club, and St. Martin's in the Pines Retirement Community. Her husband was Charles Gilmer Peyton, who died in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Lenoir Gwyn Shook.
Survivors include her sister-in-law Betty Denny Shook of Tarboro; and a host of beloved cousins, including Charles Paschal Shook III (Rhonda); Lee Moody Shook; Wayne Brasher Nelson III (Cheryl); James Keith Shook Nelson; Harriet Nelson McElroy (John); Gilmer Peyton Nelson; and their children and grandchildren. Many thanks and much love to her wonderful caregivers, Dora Dansby, Vivian Samuel, Pat Smith, Annette Byrd, and Pat Brewster.
A family burial will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Elmwood Cemetery followed by a memorial service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 2:30. The family will receive friends following the service. It was her wish that any memorial gifts be made to St. Luke's; to St. Mary's School, 900 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603; or to Calvary Episcopal Church, Tarboro, NC 27886. Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama.
