Barbara Joan Bell Mandy decided to take a well-earned rest at the age of 84. She departed this world on March 14, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, an enviable TV watchlist, a palette of colorful memories, and a deep love for both children and animals. Like a well-composed painting, her life was filled with vibrant moments, careful brushstrokes of creativity, and just the right amount of artistic flair.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William H. Mandy Jr., and some dearly departed pets, including the ever-iconic Rupert, who ruled the household with a mix of charm and mischief.
Barbara is survived by daughter Madeline Crowson (Bill), son William H. Mandy III “Hal”, and grandchildren Allyson M. Busby and James H. Busby “Jay” (Abby) - a family that fully appreciates a well-timed joke, a classic TV show, and the undeniable greatness of Tom Selleck’s mustache.
A woman of refined taste, Barbara enjoyed art, music, and TV that made her laugh. She appreciated the genius of Van Gogh and Da Vinci, swooned over the voices of Perry Como, Louis Armstrong, Cher, and Elvis, and never missed an episode of Yellowstone, Ghosts, Young Sheldon, Mork & Mindy, or The Golden Girls (because frankly, all the best things in life come with great comedic timing). She also had a soft spot for Laurel & Hardy, because let’s be honest - physical comedy never goes out of style.
A founding member of the Vestavia Hills Art Association and a longtime member of the Mountain Chapel Art Group, Barbara dedicated her life to making the world a little more colorful - literally. Her artistic talent graced canvases, church projects, and Sunday School room walls, ensuring no space was left looking dull. She had an impeccable eye for color and the ability to turn a blank surface into something beautiful.
Barbara had a sharp wit, a strong sense of humor, and absolutely no tolerance for rule-breaking when a dress code was involved (you know who you are). She had an uncanny ability to turn everyday moments into comedy gold. And let’s not forget - she had absolutely no filter. If she thought it, she said it. If you needed honesty, she was your go-to.
The family extends their most sincere thanks to Manessa, Renita, Janica, Beatrice and Deborah for the attention, love and care they have given Barbara over the last several years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 11:00 AM in the chapel at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. The family will receive friends before the service at 10:00 AM in Hudson Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mountain Brook Baptist Church (her church of 47 years), the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, or an organization of your choice.
