Barbara Jean Hunter Moore passed away on December 26, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas (Tom) Johnson Moore, Jr.; her parents, Roger and Jean Hunter; and her brother, Roger (Flint) Mills Hunter, Jr. Barbara is survived by her children, Sue Moore Abele (Matthew) and Thomas Johnson Moore III; her grandchildren, Carlisle Abele Wheeler (Jake), Mary Katherine Abele Bryant (Hogan), and Emma Abele (Thomas "Woody" Woodford); her six great-grandchildren, Hudson James, Milas Karl, Brinkley Gibson, Herschel Thomas, Nora Jean, and Adelaide Teresa; her brother-in-law, Jo Gibson Moore, and her nephew, Jo Gibson Moore, Jr. (Libby).
Barbara was born on October 19, 1942, in Macon, Georgia. She was a proud graduate of The University of Georgia, where she made lifelong friendships with her pledge sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta. In 1964 she married her college sweetheart and fellow Georgia grad, Tom, and together they moved wherever Tom's FBI career sent them. In their first nine years of marriage, they lived in Washington, DC, Oklahoma City, Buffalo, Rochester, Minneapolis, and Birmingham. In 1975 she began her highly successful 43-year career as a realtor, starting with Chap Hodges Realty, followed by Johnson-Rast and Hays/RealtySouth. She made people feel at home in their new city and she loved showing off the beauty of Birmingham to newcomers. Even while working at her full-time career, she still found time to volunteer with the PTA and was the third parent in the history of Mountain Brook High School to be awarded a "Spartan Crest".
Through her husband, she found her Catholic faith and soon became a daily communicant at St. Francis Xavier, where she served on the parish council, finance council, and parish hall building committee; coordinated the Firehouse Shelter dinner teams; and started the parish Christmas "Sharing Tree," which she chaired for the next 36 years.
Her greatest passion was her three granddaughters. She never missed a school program, ball game, college visit or an opportunity to brag on them. As a young widow, they gave her purpose.
The family will receive friends at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on December 29, 2023, beginning at 9:00am with the funeral Mass following at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Barbara to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Service Guild of Birmingham, or Encore Respite Program at Canterbury Methodist Church.
