Bernard Sam Zamudio, age 86, passed away at his home in Hoover on Wednesday, September 13th, 2017. Sam was a retired Petro-Chemical Engineer who had worked with Rust, International based here in Birmingham for over 25 years. Subsequently, he continued his engineering work for Witco Organo-Silicones Group and Crompton Corp. where he was recognized for his innovative design work and inventions with acetylene reactors. His career in chemical process engineering spanned over 50 years and led him to travel extensively throughout North America, the Carribean and Europe. His work often had him stationed in various different cities, most notably in Ponce, Puerto Rico Portland, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Pa. and Milan, Italy. His last few project assignments in Germany and Italy (where he also resided intermittently, for several years) were among his favorites.
Sam was a graduate of the Rolla, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (where he also became an instructor shortly after graduating). He then proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army where he rose up to become a military tank commander. His time in the armed forces left an indelible mark upon his character which he always carried with pride and dignity.
He is survived by his wife, Rosario Quinones-Roque Zamudio, his daughters: Solange Z. Dabbs (Barry) and Marlena Katherine Zamudio-Webb (Ken); his grandchildren Garrison Samuel Dabbs, and Anastasia Katherine Webb. He was preceeded in death by his first grandchild, Charles Peyton Dabbs, whose tragic loss in 2016 was a tremendous blow to the entire family. (Sadly, Peyton would have turned 21 years old on the day his “Poppy” died).
The family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 5pm on Friday, September 22nd, 2017 at Ridouts Valley Chapel in Homewood.
Arrangements under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood, AL.
