Bettie Sue Phillips Jackson, age 79 of Homewood, Ala., longtime resident of Birmingham, born June 1, 1933, graduated from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 4, 2013, and no longer suffers from the pain of the cancer she’d had for more than 3 years. Bettie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Rhoda Phillips Phillips and W.A. Phillips, Sr., and her husband Jim Jackson. She’s survived by her daughters, Shari Calloway of Birmingham, and Linda (Tom) Brown of Smyrna, Tenn.; sons, James E. Jackson, II, of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Jeff Jackson of Homewood; grandchildren, Shannon Calloway and Samantha Calloway of Birmingham, Cullen (Nicole) Brown of Franklin, Tenn., Kathy (Christopher) Pitts and Jennifer Brown of Smyrna, Tenn.; and seven great grandchildren; brothers, John E. (Denise) Phillips of Vestavia, Ala., and Archie (Sharon) Phillips of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; cousins, Sally and John Berryhill and numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Wylam Elementary and Ensley High School, Bettie’s lifelong philosophy of always serving others was the reason she became a nurse, graduating from Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing (today Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, Samford University) and Case Western Reserve University and receiving her master’s degree from Michigan State University. Bettie served in many hospitals across the U.S. and was director of nursing education at Brookwood Medical Center and coordinator of clinical trials at UAB. An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the choir, she served in various capacities and participated in numerous missions’ trips. Bettie received the Making a Difference Award from Channel 13 TV and the Ida V. Moffett Courage to Care in 2012. In lieu of flowers, Bettie requested that all remembrances be sent to: Trinity United Methodist Church, or SIFAT, or Heifer International ( The viewing will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 7, with the funeral to be held at 1:00 pm the same day - both at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood with Ridout’s Valley Chapel on Oxmoor Road directing.

Sherry, I am so very sorry I didn't know about Betty's passing. She was a wonderful friend to my mother and our family. God rest her soul. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
