

On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Betty Crim Glasscock, long member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, and former Stephen Minister, passed away at age 88, peacefully in her home. Betty was born March 19, 1931, in Warrior, grew up in Cullman, and settled in the Birmingham area with her surviving sister, Mary Nell Glasscock. Other remaining family members include nieces and a nephew and their families. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Elwin Glasscock, Sr. and her parents Rufus Columbus Glasscock and Bessie Lucille Glasscock (Crim), all of whom are resting in Cullman Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Canterbury UMC, in the Parlor at ten o'clock in the morning followed by a memorial service in the Canterbury Chapel at eleven o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made as memorial tributes in Betty’s name to either UAB, or UT, to continue her service to our community.

Betty graduated from Cullman High School, received her BS from St. Bernard’s College (Cum Laude), and received an MSSW from University of Tennessee in 1966. From there, Betty launched her 30 year career of Social Work service before her “official” retirement in 1996. Betty worked with Children’s Services before beginning her long affiliation with the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she moved from Instructor, through the ranks, to Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the School of Public Health. She was instrumental in passing and implementing the Social Work Licensing Law.
Following retirement from UAB, she served as Executive Director of the Alabama Chapter, National Association of Social Workers (NASW); State Coordinator, Pediatric Cardiology Program, Children’s Rehabilitation Service, Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Service; Field Education Liaison of School of Social Work University of Alabama; and Chair of the School Social Work Task Force for NASW.
Awards include: 1978- Social Worker of the Year, NASW- Alabama Chapter; 2001-Lifetime Achievement Award, NASW- Alabama Chapter; 2003 – Alabama Social Worker Hall of Fame Honoree; 2016 – Alumna Distinguished Service Award, University of Tennessee, College of Social Work.
She was one of the founding members of the Stephen Ministries at Canterbury where she served for several years, a member of Joy Sunday School Class, and a member of the Tuesday Morning Laura Sisson Bible Study group. She, and her example of service to her community and the welfare of families in this state, will be deeply missed.
