Betty Jane Langley Kitchings , age 91 of Mountain Brook passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016. She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reber Langley (Bess Ross) and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She married Atley Kitchings on December 16, 1944, graduated from Mississippi College in 1947 and was a schoolteacher for 10 years. Betty Jane loved recalling fond memories of the time she spent teaching in Charlottesville, Virginia while her husband attended UVA Law School. They then moved to Birmingham where she taught at the Brook Hill School. Betty Jane was a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church for 45 years. She was also a member of the Birmingham Bar Auxiliary, the Hermitage Garden Club, the Coronets and Ballerina Dance Clubs and John Parke Custis Chapter of DAR.
Betty Jane will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her elegant sense of style and stunning smile. She is survived by her devoted husband of 71 years, Atley Asher Kitchings, Jr.; daughter, Jane Marlea Kitchings Foster (John) of Birmingham, Alabama; Atley Langley Kitchings (Edie) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Ashley Jane Foster (Birmingham); Asher Langley Kitchings (Birmingham); Elisabeth Gaillard Foster (Atlanta) and Andrew Connor Kitchings (Atlanta).
The memorial service will be on Friday, July 8 at 10:30AM at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Hudson Hall.
The family would like to thank her wonderful longtime caregivers, Hazel Robinson and Gloria Carter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in memory of Betty Jane be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Alabama or Mountain Brook Baptist Church.
