PROSCH, WILLIAM FRANK, JR. ("Bill"), age 85, of Birmingham, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, growing up in the neighborhood of Norwood where he earned the nickname “Willie” and the "Nifty-Lefty” while playing baseball for the Norwood Reds. He proudly served his community and answered the call to make the world a more peaceful place by serving for two years as a Peace Corp volunteer teaching English in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Africa. Upon his return, he embarked on a distinguished, fifty-year legal career in Birmingham.
Bill graduated from Vanderbilt University. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern California. He went on to attend Cumberland School of Law, graduating in 1970, and thereafter practiced law continuously in Birmingham. He was an active member of the Birmingham Bar Association, regularly attending the annual Christmas luncheon, summer picnic, and other Bar functions. He played softball with the solo practitioners’ team. In 2017, Cumberland recognized him as an Honored Alumni for his Pro Bono service.
Bill lived his entire adult life in Birmingham. He was deeply devoted to civic and community engagement. Bill was active in the Sertoma Club and the Sierra Club for many years. He was a devoted member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, participating in the Canterbury Core Disciples men’s group and Aldersgate Sunday School Class. He had a servant’s heart and dedicated time to several ministries, including a prison ministry at Donaldson Prison, and he logged numerous pro bono hours with Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham.
In his free time, Bill enjoyed playing golf with his sons and delighted in coaching and watching his children’s youth sports teams, watching and attending sporting events, spending time outdoors, and enjoying evenings with his pets—his cat, Rosco, and his dog, Cash—often with a beer and peanuts in hand. He lived a long and fulfilling life, was loved by many, and will be dearly missed.
Bill was a loving and dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather known as “Pop Pop.” He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Lucas); father, William Frank Prosch Sr.; brother, Charles Nicholas Prosch; and nephew, Scott Prosch. He is survived by his devoted wife of thirty-six years, Elizabeth (Liz) Prosch; daughter, Adrienne Veland (John); sons, Brad and William “Trey” III; grandchildren Micah, Gabe, and Kaleigh (Veland); niece, Amy Shober (Tom); nephew, Chuck Prosch; and his beloved pets, Rosco and Cash.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the many friends, colleagues, and faith community members who supported Bill and his family.
