The first child of Dr. Joseph Merrill Lee and Linda Wellons Lee, Carol grew up in Homewood with her sister Donna and brothers Mark and David. After graduating from Shades Valley High School, she attended the University of Alabama, where she met her husband, Carl Morton Slaughter, Jr.
Carol and Morton married in 1966 and made their home in Vestavia Hills. Over their 60-year marriage, they built a life that beautifully reflected their devotion to one another. Their commitment to putting each other first will forever inspire all who knew them.
Together, they owned and operated Vestavia Hills Apothecary and Annabelle’s for over 35 years. Affectionately known at work as “Bosslady,” Carol was remarkably creative with a thoughtful attention to detail. Her cherished Annabelle’s family proudly carries on her passion for serving others with that same care and love.
Carol and Morton were blessed with four children: Brian (Margie), Blakeley (David), Adam (Brooke), and Justin, and eight grandchildren who knew her as "Anny": Sam Slaughter, Linley Splawn, Ben Splawn, Brooks Splawn, Celia Slaughter, John Dalton Splawn, Henry Slaughter, and Hall Slaughter. The grandchildren all shared a special bond with Anny, whether through large family gatherings, “cousin nights” at Anny and Papa’s, lake time, or her constant presence at games, ballet recitals, and school events. She was especially gifted at cards and word games and each grandchild enjoyed the opportunity to learn from and perhaps one day beat Anny in a game.
Carol will be so missed by her loved ones, but they take great comfort in knowing that she is fully healed and resting with Jesus.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the family home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Carol’s honor to the Parkinson Voice Project at parkinsonvoiceproject.org.
