Carolyn Joy Young Carter beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went to rest in the loving arms of her Savior on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She was born November 19, 1923 to Mary Jane Alkire Young and Frederick McClintock Young in Mount Sterling, Ohio. A proud graduate of the Ohio State University, she moved to Birmingham after World War II to raise her family. She quickly adopted her new home in the South where she loved and enjoyed her many friends, neighbors, and precious church family. She was a devoted mother and homemaker and a woman who could discern right from wrong. Many will remember with fondness her talents in knitting, baking delicious treats, serving at her church, and taking in the sunshine on the golf course. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children Carol (Rob) Hunter and John (Molly) Carter; her grandchildren Deb (Francois) McGillicuddy, Dr. Robert (Courtney) Hunter, Kadee Hunter, Maggie (Tyler) O’Connor, John (Laura) Carter Jr., and Liles Carter; and her five precious great-grandchildren Patrick, Hunter, and Grace McGillicuddy, Amelia Hunter, and John Carter III. She is also survived by her loving sister Mrs. Marge Wittich of Mount Sterling, Ohio; niece Janie (Todd) Greiner of Columbus, Ohio; and nephew Tommy (Karen) Wittich of Manhattan Beach, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Bethy Jones of Columbus, Ohio; and her brother-in-law, Tom Wittich of Mount Sterling. Our family sends many thanks to the staff at St. Vincent’s SICU who tended to her during her brief illness. Carolyn’s zest for life and independent spirit will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of her life will be held at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church on Monday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, 2305 Montevallo Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35223.
