Carolyn K Lytle

Carolyn was married to Donald “Don” Lytle of Birmingham, for more than 52 years, until Don went to be with the Lord in November 2022. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, education, and service.

Don and Carolyn were both graduates of Samford University, where they prepared for careers in education. Carolyn began her teaching career as an English teacher at Mountain Brook Junior High School before stepping away from the classroom to devote herself to raising their two children. Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and returned to teaching at Vestavia Hills Elementary West in 1988.

Carolyn taught third grade before completing her career in 2008 as a Reading Coach. Although she received many recognitions as an educator—including her election to the Vestavia Hills City Schools Hall of Fame, Class of 2025—her greatest passion was helping children discover a love of reading. She believed that reading was the foundation of lifelong learning, and she gave countless students the confidence, encouragement, and skills to become lifelong readers.

Following her retirement, Carolyn continued to serve through the ministries of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Her service included tutoring adults in literacy, quietly helping others develop the skills and confidence to share their own stories and experiences, and managing the book library for Kids Connection, a ministry that provides for the spiritual and practical needs of children and families in the Birmingham area. Carolyn also faithfully served in the music ministry of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church for nearly seven decades, as a choir member and as a preschool choir director.

More than her accomplishments, Carolyn will be remembered for the way she loved people—especially her family. She took great joy in developing meaningful relationships with her grandchildren and was a constant presence in their lives. From lacrosse fields and basketball courts to piano recitals and other school events, Carolyn rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on.

Carolyn treasured time with her broader family as well—especially Sunday lunches at home after church, beach trips, and the large family gathering in Nantahala each summer. Any occasion to be with those she loved was a gift to her.

Carolyn’s legacy lives on in the faith she modeled, the readers she inspired, the children and adults she served, and the family who will forever be grateful for her steady love, joyful presence, and faithful example.

The family is deeply grateful to the compassionate caregivers of Gentle Home Care and Compassus Hospice and for their loving partnership in Carolyn’s care during the final sixteen months of her life.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Wilma Keyees, and her beloved husband, Donald “Don” Lytle. She is survived by her children, Allison Powell (David) and Michael Lytle (Karmin); and her four grandchildren, Marshall Powell (Peyton), Mary Claire Powell, Kaleb Lytle, and Luke Lytle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Kids Connection, 1114 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35209. Kids Connection provides for the spiritual and practical needs of children and families in the Birmingham area.

Services will be held in the Sanctuary at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church on October 6th at 11a. Fellowship with the family will precede the service at 10a and a private graveside service will be held later that day.

The family encourages those attending to join the family in wearing bright colors as we celebrate the finished work of Jesus Christ in Carolyn’s life.
