Age 86, of Mountain Brook, Alabama passed away on July 13, 2021. Mr. Carper is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy Oliver Carper; sons Charles Elliott Carper, IV (Jan) and Richard Oliver Carper, and daughter Katherine Carper Rochester (Steve), his sister Elizabeth Ann Hoffman (Roy). Mr. Carper is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Charles Elliott Carper V, Laura Muse, (Jacob), Jerri Rochester, Lisa Rochester, and a great grandson, Hunter Carper. He is also survived by his loving niece, Jeannine Burton.
Mr. Carper attended Sewanee Military Academy, and the University of Alabama. While at Sewanee and the University of Alabama, he was actively involved in athletics, particularly in track & field, specializing in pole vaulting. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity while at the University of Alabama.
After leaving the University of Alabama, Mr. Carper served in the United States Navy. After his military service, Mr. Carper entered the mortgage banking business with Cobbs, Allen, & Hall, and Associated Mortgage Company. Mr. Carper then worked for First Alabama Bank and then with Carper Construction Company.
“Brother” Carper took deep pride in giving back. He was deeply involved, and always championed, those who were less fortunate. Mr. Carper was also a Board Member of the Arc of Central Alabama, as was his wife, Nancy, and his son Charlie. The Arc of Central Alabama serves those with intellectual delays and/or disabilities.
Always deep in his faith, Mr. Carper served as the Senior Warden of Saint Stephan’s Episcopal Church. He was also the Chairman and Life Board Member of the King’s Ranch, helped build the Holy Innocents Ministry, enjoyed working with the ministry of Saint Ann’s.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arc of Central Alabama.
A private memorial service will be planned at a later date.
