Charles “Flip” David Phillips III passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2026. Born on September 4, 1951, in Memphis, Tennessee, Flip was the beloved son of Charles David Phillips Jr. and Peggy Jean Blaylock.
Flip is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patty Meon Phillips; his children, Emmett O'Neal Templeton III (KC), Casey Templeton Stratford (Matt), and Taylor Templeton Estes (Brian); and his loving grandchildren, Henry Templeton, Lucy Templeton, Alice Templeton, Max Stratford, Cam Stratford, Rhodes Estes, and Brooks Estes. Flip was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Amy Thibodeau.
Flip graduated from Samford University, where he was a proud member of the 1971 Samford University National Championship football team. After college, Flip was a tennis professional for over 40 years at numerous clubs throughout the Southeast. He became a fixture on the Birmingham tennis scene, culminating in his induction into the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame in 2020.
Flip cherished the many lifelong friendships he made throughout his life. Whether on the tennis court, at his grandsons' baseball games, in the grocery store, or simply while striking up a conversation with a stranger, he had a gift for connecting with people. He especially loved the friendships built around a shared love of Alabama football. A devoted Crimson Tide fan, Flip was always ready to cheer on Alabama and talk football with anyone willing to listen.
But his greatest pride and joy was being "Poppa" to his seven grandchildren. He treasured every moment spent with them and was immensely proud of each one.
For the past 15 years, Flip fought a long and courageous battle. Despite the many challenges he faced, his positive attitude and strength never wavered. Flip embraced his Catholic faith, and his unwavering belief gave him strength, peace, and hope throughout his difficult journey.
Flip will be remembered for his love of his family and friends, his passion for tennis and Alabama football, and the joy he brought to everyone that knew him.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows on August 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St Jude’s Research Hospital in Flip’s memory.
