

Charles S. Powell Sr. ,“Steve”, age 90 of Vestavia Hills Alabama passed away June 30, 2022. He was born in Birmingham Alabama on August 29, 1931. “Steve” graduated from Ensley High School and was awarded a D.M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1955. He served in the United States Army Dental Core obtaining the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1964. In 1967 he accepted the position of Associate Professor of Dentistry at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry where he served for 37 years as Director of Clinical Programs for the Department of Operative Dentistry, and Director of Operative Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dentistry as well as providing lectures and clinical coverage for the operative and treatment planning clinic. He retired in 1995 with the highest academic rank of professor. He was a member of the National Dental Honor Society and was also an active member of the Alabama Conservancy, now the Alabama Environmental Council. He was the founder, past president, and active member of the Blue Lake Homeowners Association.
Steve was married to Mary Lellon Edwards for 66 years. He had a passion for boating, fishing, camping, and home improvement. He is survived by his wife Mary, Mickie Lynn Powell (daughter), Charles Stephenson Powell, Jr.(son), Wesley Owen Powell (grandson), and Audrey Megan Powell (granddaughter).
Visitation will be at 10 am Tuesday July 5 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel (Homewood). Service to follow at 11 am. Burial will take place Wednesday July 6th at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 12:30 pm
In leu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Alabama Environmental Council.
