Charles M. Purvis, age 79, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021, surrounded in love by his family. Charles was born on April 27, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Phillips High School in 1960. He met the love of his life, Barbara Yarbrough, there and they were married on November 21, 1964, celebrating 56 years of marriage. He attended Samford University and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He earned his Bachelor of Science and then went on to graduate from Samford University Cumberland School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree. After a successful 25-year career practicing law, Charles brought his vast knowledge to A.C. Legg Inc., where he enjoyed working alongside his family for 33 years.
Charles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was affectionately known as “Grandad” to his eight grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He was a constant encourager in their lives, supporting them in everything from Eagle Scouts to emergency flat-tire phone calls to college move-ins. He was always in attendance at sports games, dance recitals, award ceremonies and graduations. When he wasn’t taking his grandchildren out on the boat, grilling them a delicious meal or beating them in dominoes, he could often be found in the stands, cheering on the Atlanta Braves or the Crimson Tide. He was a dedicated Christian man and loved his church. His unwavering Christian faith served as an example to his family and so many others.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. Purvis and Kathryn N. Purvis, as well as his sister, Sandra Purvis. Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Purvis; his children, Chuck Purvis (Laura), Melissa Purvis Horne (Donis), Heather Purvis Frezza (Marco); his grandchildren, Ryan Purvis, Matt Purvis (Emily), Olivia Horne, Preston Horne, Mason Horne, Gael Frezza, Andalou Frezza, Pascal Frezza; his sister, Charlene Dickerson, and brother, James Purvis (Suzy); his brothers-in-law, Bobby Yarbrough and Russell Yarbrough (Nita) and his many nieces and nephews. Charles will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, quick wit and brave resilience.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Matthew 11:28-30
