Charles was born in 1925 and served in the Navy as an officer and a rescue pilot. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Mitchell, in September, 1945. He graduated from Howard College and was employed at South Central Bell for 42 years and retired as a District Traffic Manager. He was a professional tennis player, enjoyed bridge, was a voracious reader, a learner, an artist, a poet, and a writer with many editorial articles published in the Birmingham News. As an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, he was a lector and facilitator for Catholic Charities. Charles was also known as Val, Dad, D-Dad, Papa and GGF (Great grandfather). He was able to engage people, and strangers loved him immediately. He will be missed by so many people because he had an impact on everyone he met.
Charles is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Mitchell Vallely; son, Patrick Vallely (Jane) of Rochester, NY; daughter, Liz Von Bergen; three grandchildren, Amy Steel, Patrick Vallely of Boston, MA, and Erik Von Bergen; sister Barbara Carney of Tyler, TX; and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, 35213) or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be offered at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com.
