Christine was born in 1926 to Minnie and Richard Cooper, and was raised in Birmingham. She attended Howard College (now Samford University). There she met her husband, Wayne, to whom she would be married for 67 years. Christine personified a true Southern Lady, and she was dedicated to her husband and to her family. She was always with Wayne, supporting him in every way during his career with Shook & Fletcher Insulation Company and into his retirement. Together they built a life at Shoal Creek, enjoyed Hollybrook Lake, and spent over 25 summers at Highlands Falls in Highlands, North Carolina.
Christine enjoyed travel, and she was fortunate to explore the world with Wayne. While she had many hobbies, it was her love of art that shined the brightest. Her friends and family cherish the dozens of impressionist-style paintings she created throughout her lifetime. A devoted member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, Christine found great joy in serving others through the Knit Whits ministry, where she spent many years knitting items of comfort and care for those in need. Christine was a member of Shoal Creek Club, Mountain Brook Club, and Highlands Falls Country Club.
Together with her late husband, Christine shared a deep commitment to education and philanthropy. The couple established the Christine Cooper Killion Scholarship Fund at Birmingham Southern College and the Christine and Wayne Killion Student Progress Scholarship at the University of Montevallo, ensuring that future generations would have opportunities to learn and grow. Following the passing of her husband, son, and grandson, Christine honored their memories by helping to establish the Killion Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which is dedicated to advancing research and hope for countless families affected by neurological diseases.
Christine was predeceased by her husband, Wayne Worden Killion, Sr., her son, Dr. Wayne Worden Killion, Jr., and her grandson, Wayne Worden Killion, III. Christine is survived by her son, Christopher Howard Killion (Lynne); her daughter-in-law Sandra Reever Killion; grandsons Charles David Killion (Katy); Cooper Reever Killion (Ashley); Judson Shores Killion (Natalie); and Graham Shores Killion (Francesca). She will be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren: Anna, Joseph, Caroline, Clayton, Chrissy, and Dean.
Her family expresses gratitude to Sherry Karr, Lottie Garrett, Sylvia Greenwood, Theresa Robinson, Casandra Davis, and Henrietta Rush for providing loving care for Christine. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Killion Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics at: www.uab.edu/medicine/cnet/giving.
