Claire was born on September 7, 1947 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham to George Henry Fisher and Mary Louise Fleming Fisher. She is survived by her children Bradley Clayton Waites of Opelika and Stacey Waites Hawley of Homewood and by one grandson John Fisher Hawley of Homewood. Claire was the third of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings: George Henry Fisher Jr., Emalyn Ann Fisher, and Martin Fleming Fisher.
Claire's love of children and her desire to help people led her to a career in nursing. She graduated at the top of her class from St. Vincent's School of Nursing and worked as a pediatric nurse for over 20 years. She was an animal lover, having cared for many pets throughout her life. Claire had many different breeds over the years, but her favorite most certainly was the beagle. Her love of the breed began 25 years ago with Kramer and Whoopi and continued with Lexi and Maggie right up until her passing. She had a great love for all kinds of nature from the beach to the mountains. Claire was a passionate gardener and her favorite flowers were from her own garden. Often, she had fresh hydrangea, gardenia, and geranium blooms scattered about the house. Claire was also an avid reader and a loyal supporter of the public library system.
Visitation and a celebration of her life will be Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 11:00 am at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL .
The family would like to extend the warmest gratitude for the support and care provided by the physicians, nurses, therapists and other support staff at Brookwood Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Claire Fisher Waites to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society at 300 Snow Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209.
