

Craig Battles, 75, devoted husband, father, and true southern gentleman, passed away on June 4, 2016. Born to Commander James Edmund and Mary Battles in Pensacola, Florida, he graduated from Chula Vista High School in San Diego, California, and the University of Alabama. For many years he served as Director of Community Services for Alabama Power. He then became Public Relations Manager for Southern Research Institution. Later he became Director of Development at Advent Episcopal School for more than twenty dedicated years. Craig was a cradle Episcopalian who served on numerous boards and committees serving the greater community: Young Men's Business Club, Scientific Institute Chairman, Educational Film Festival Chairman, Educational Committee of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Five Points South YMCA President, Southern Culture Organization Chairman, and was a Summit Club member. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Thomas and Stephen Battles, and his father – in – law Morgan Slaton. He is survived by his loving wife, Una Battles, of 55 years, son Joshua, uncle Grady Maple of San Diego, mother – in – law Net Slaton of Boaz, brother – in – law Braxton Slaton (Ann) of Albertville, nephew Bret Slaton (Michelle) of Huntsville, great nephew Morgan and great niece Hannah of Huntsville, and great niece Kelsey of Birmingham. The family extends loving thanks to the medical staff of St. Vincent's Hospital, especially Dr. Jane Pearson, Dr. Richard May, Dr. David Barnes, the nurses and staff of the third floor South Tower, as well as Dr. Paul Roller. The family is grateful for the caregivers' love and support for the past five years.Craig will be joyously remembered for his gentle spirit, generous heart, beautifully creative mind, unfailing enthusiasm for Alabama football, but most of all for his devoted love for his family. The pallbearers will be Holt Cloud, Kurt Miller, Mike Montenegro, George Nolan, David Senseman, and Steve Tilghman. The funeral service will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. with the burial in Albertville at Memory Hill Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Cathedral Church of the Advent Pastoral Care, the Endowment Fund of Advent Episcopal School, or a favorite charity.
