Dan Lunsford Hendley, age 80, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on May 11, 2018. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 26, 1938, the only child of Frank and Mattie Hendley. He grew up in Robertson county, Tennessee. Shortly after graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1960, he married Patricia Anne Fariss. He served in the Tennessee Air National Guard from 1961 to 1967. He worked for the Federal Reserve in Atlanta from 1962 to 1969 and moved to Birmingham in 1969 to manage the Birmingham branch. In 1973, Dan joined the First National Bank of Birmingham, later AmSouth Bank, where he was president from 1977 to 1990. Dan was a Samford University trustee for many years, and also served as the university’s Vice President of Business Affairs from 1991 to 1996. He was a longtime trustee of the Children’s Hospital of Alabama and was very involved with the Hall of Fame and All-American Bowl games. He was active in a variety of other civic activities including Kiwanis Club and Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the inaugural class of Leadership Birmingham, and a longtime member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church. Dan is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patsy; his son, Dan (Pam); his daughter, Laura; and granddaughters Kate, Abby, and Caroline.
Visitation will take at place Monday, May 14, at 1:00 at Mountain Brook Baptist Church with a memorial service to follow at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Mountain Brook Baptist Church, 3631 Montevallo Rd, Mountain Brook, Al 35213, or to the charity of your choice.
