
David Henry Gilchrist Sr. passed away on August 3, 2016. Mr. Gilchrist was born on July 2, 1940 in Birmingham, AL. He graduated from Pensacola High School in Pensacola, FL where he was an All American High School Football Player. Mr. Gilchrist attended Troy State University on a football scholarship for one year before transferring to Auburn University where he received a Bachelor’s degree, a Masters of Business Administration and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy and served on the destroyer USS Beale including an extended stint off the coast of the Republic of Vietnam in 1965. In the United States Naval Reserve Mr. Gilchrist served several years on the USS Tweedy out of Pensacola, FL rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Gilchrist worked the majority of his professional life with A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc. as a First Vice President / Branch Manager and ended his career with Stifel Advisors.
He was a member of the Shades Valley Rotary Club and was a volunteer with the Birmingham Reads Project.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Barganier Gilchrist, father Malcolm William Gilchrist, Jr., mother Marjorie Enzor Gilchrist, and brother, Malcolm Lane Gilchrist, Sr.
Mr. Gilchrist is survived by his wife, Jan Jones Gilchrist; sons David Henry Gilchrist, Jr., (Jody) and John Michel Gilchrist (Marianne); and grandchildren, Margaret Shirley Gilchrist, David Henry Gilchrist III, and Marianne Barganier Gilchrist. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Robert Gilchrist of Pensacola, FL.
His gentle spirit, positive attitude, and tough perseverance have always been a source of strength and he will be sorely missed by all.
The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Private burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at The Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 6th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203 at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 7, 2016. The family will receive friends and family following the service.
