Donald Comer III died peacefully in his home in Birmingham, Alabama March 30, 2015. He was surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. He is survived by his wife Marie A. Comer; three children: Jason Legare Comer ( Anna Mingus Comer) , Luke McDonald Comer , Carrie St. George Alsup (Benjamin Wickliff Alsup) and their mother Jane Stephens Comer; his six grandchildren: Charles Donald Comer, Pelham Legare Comer, Margaret Lula Jane Comer , Alys Lucille Comer, Evelyn Robinson Alsup and Joseph Edward Alsup.
Graduated from the University of Alabama, Donald served with the United States Air Force 1961-1964. He started work in 1962 with Cowikee Mills, and later became the CEO of Avondale Mills, after Avondale and Cowikee merged. He also served as Past Chairman Alabama Ethics Commission. Devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was highly regarded as a consummate gentleman who provided great company. Additionally, he was passionate about his hobbies of architecture, design, culinary arts and oenophilia. His family especially enjoyed many wonderful years of the fine cuisine he would prepare. Some of his family's best memories with him were at their beloved home on the Gulf of Mexico.
Memorial Services will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Burial services will be private for the family at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery where Donald will be buried in the company of his father, Donald Comer, Jr., his mother, Isabel Bibb Anderson Comer, his brother Charles Pelham Anderson Comer and his sister Isabel Anderson Comer.
