She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Lawrence Dumas, Jr. and her son, Lawrence Dumas III.
Survivors of Mrs. Dumas include her daughter, Aleta Schanbacher (husband Robert); daughter-in-law, Betsy (husband Lawrence III, deceased); sons, William Berry Dumas (wife Nell, deceased) and John Hicks Dumas II (wife Anne), all of Birmingham.
Survivors also include nine grandchildren, Robert Schanbacher (wife Sondra), Mary Jackson (husband Frank), Lawrence Dumas IV (wife Prachi), George Dumas (wife Susan), Margaret Bond (husband Christopher), Mary Ellen Dumas, John Dumas III (wife Emily), Caroline Malatesta (husband, J.T.), and Paul Dumas. Mrs. Dumas is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dumas was educated at Phillips High School in Birmingham and The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. She graduated from Vassar College in 1936 with a degree in English and French. After working for a years as a commercial illustrator in New York, she returned to Birmingham.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend who filled the lives of her family and many friends with love and joy. She was an active member of Highlands United Methodist Church for many years. She served on local boards of the American Red Cross, Mercy Hospital (now Cooper Green Hospital) and Jefferson Tuberculosis Sanatorium. She was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, Daughters of the American Revolution (John Parke Custis Chapter) and The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. She was also involved as a volunteer in numerous other civic, cultural and charitable organizations and as a member of several social groups. Donald was a talented artist and she enjoyed gardening, history and politics.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 A.M. at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. The burial will be private for the family at Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggests that any memorial gifts may be made to Highlands United Methodist Church (1045 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205), The Salvation Army (P.O. Box 11005, Birmingham, AL 35202) or your favorite charity.
