Donald Eugene Lytle went to be with his Lord on November 18, 2022. He was born in Akron, Ohio to Edwin and Margaret Lytle. He was married to Carolyn Keyees of Birmingham, AL for over 52 years. Don and Carolyn both graduated from Samford University where they studied to be educators. Don taught World History, Government, and Economics in Mountain Brook City Schools for 43 years, starting with the formation of the school system. While he received many awards, he was most proud of the work that he did with students that needed the most help, always going above and beyond to engage with them and help them succeed. After retirement, Don still found joy in substitute teaching and serving the community through teaching adult literacy. Don faithfully served his church, Dawson Family of Faith, as a Sunday school teach, Deacon, Church Secretary, and many other roles. While still serving in his retirement, he made time to do the things he enjoyed the most, which was spending time and developing relationships with his grandchildren. From the lacrosse field, to the basketball court, to the piano recital, Don never missed an event for his grandkids. More importantly, he wanted to engage them on things that interested them, whether that was talking about Alabama football, the Atlanta Braves, or Star Wars, or watching Hallmark Christmas movies he was interested in the topic if they were interested and they know he loved them so. He also deeply enjoyed his time with the broader family whether it was the weekly lunch at their house after church, the beach trip to Orange Beach and all the fresh seafood, or the large family gathering in Nantahala each summer. Don loved any opportunity to spend time with his family that he loved so deeply.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Margaret Lytle, and his brother Norman Lytle. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn, his brother John Lytle, and his children Allison Powell (David) and Michael Lytle (Karmin). He leaves four grandchildren: Marshall Powell, Mary Claire Powell, Kaleb Lytle, and Luke Lytle.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Dawson Foundation, 1114 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL 35209. The Dawson Foundation provides educational scholarships to students and Don served on the scholarship committee many years and believed in the mission.
Services will be in the Sanctuary at the Dawson Family of Faith on November 22 at 10am. Fellowship with family to follow the service. The family will have a private graveside that afternoon.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the Lytle family.
