

Mrs. Allen was born on Christmas Day 1916 in Beaverton, AL, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Clement Smith. Soon after the family moved to Birmingham, AL. Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and received her BS Degree in both English and History from Howard College (Samford University). She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, which she served as President her senior years. She was also president of Women's Pan-Hellenic. After graduation, she traveled for her sorority for a short time in Ohio at the University of Ohio, Ohio State Wittenberg College of Ohio and the University of Indiana.
Mrs. Allen was a devoted elementary teacher for many years in the Jefferson County and Mtn. Brook School Systems. In 1972, she was nominated by the Mtn. Brook School System as their representative for National Teacher of the Year. For many years she was active in P.T.A. serving as the East Lake Elementary School President in 1957.
Mrs. Allen was a long time member of Eastlake United Methodist Church where she was a teacher in The Randolph Class. She also served as director of Children's Bible School,Children's church and den mother for Cub Scout's for 3 years. After moving to Vestavia she became a member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church she served 3 years on the official board, was church directory chairman in 1994 and a member of The Trinity Sunday School Class. She was a member of the U.M. W. (Circle 4), the “Sew N Sews” at VHUMC, Shakespeare Study Club, The Chatelaine Dance Club, and “The Club” of Birmingham.
Mrs. Allen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 67 years, C. Rae Allen, Sr., her only child, C. Rae Allen, Jr., her brother, J.C. Smith, Jr. and her sister, Edith (Dede)Smith.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her granddaughter Lyndy Allen McGregor, grandson-in-law Brian McGregor, and two great grandchildren: Madelyn Lee McGregor and Harrison Allen McGregor.
Visitation for Mrs. Allen will be Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
