in the wee hours of March 18, 2021 in Birmingham. Sadly,
she, like so many others in the past year, succumbed to the
debilitating after effects of Covid 19.
Jean was beloved by her parents, her brother, her husband,
children, nieces and nephews, and her precious
grandchildren and great grandchildren. She met Jack, the
love of her life, at church in Atlanta and the two were
married in 1945 while Jack was on leave from the Navy.
They had been married for over 69 years when he passed
away in 2015 and she missed him terribly these last 6 years.
Jean will be remembered for her playful nature, her love of
trees, flowers and birds, and her bountiful generosity. Her
grandchildren were her favorite people and she spent her time with them playing
games and putting puzzles together, making cookies, reading, feeding the birds and
“rock hopping” out in the back woods. They note her unconditional love, her strong
spirit, and her love of travel as having been imparted to them by her. She was a very
talented seamstress, photographer, craftsman and gardener and was a good teacher of
these skills. Wherever she and her family lived, her “handprint” was evident
throughout the house and landscape. She loved being outdoors in nature, camping,
hiking or just sitting on the patio, watching the birds on the feeders and bird baths. She
was an avid traveler and went far and wide internationally with Jack. The Grand
Canyon was her favorite place on Earth; and they spent time there almost every year
until they were in their eighties. Watching the sunset over the Canyon was one of her
favorite pastimes.
She is survived by her 3 children Linda Denham (Frank), Dunwoody, Georgia, Elena
Smith (Kevin), White Salmon, Washington, and John Manning (Pam), Dothan, Alabama,
8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
We miss you already Maw Maw, and will always cherish the memory of your impish
sparkle and your heart of pure gold.
