Dorothy (Dollo) Davis DeGuenther on this earth exactly 97 years! was a beloved and adored child who became a beloved and adored wife, mother and friend. She lived her last nine years in Birmingham, AL, in Independent Living at Saint Martin's in the Pines where she was a one-woman welcome wagon for new residents. Dollo graduated from Louisiana Tech University, a Home Economics major and a spunky cheerleader. She never lost her sparkle. To the end, she had her lipstick on and spent her days flirting, advising, consoling, cautioning and loving. Her kindness and compassion grew as she aged. Dollo left us with dignity and love. Her suffering was short, and her fun ratio was over the top. Everyone will miss her. Dollo was born in Alexandria, LA, to Thomas Claude Davis and Bessie Gertrude Shaw Davis. She had one brother, now deceased, Thomas Daniel Davis of Fairhope, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jerome John DeGuenther. Together they had four children: Pat DeGuenther Paik of San Bruno, CA; Jane DeGuenther Kelly of Birmingham; J. John DeGuenther (Olga) of Atlanta; and Mark Stephen DeGuenther (Laura) of Birmingham. Dollo and Jerry had 10 grandchildren: Kevin J. Kelly (Michelle), Beth Kelly Rowell (Chris), John DeGuenther (Meredith), Ann Simpson (Will), Valerie Paik, Andrea Paik Geise(Jason), Kate DeGuenther, Kelly DeGuenther Boyle (Ryan), Stephen DeGuenther and William DeGuenther as well as 11 great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dollo's life will be held in the Chapel at Saint Martin's for family, Saint Martin's friends and staff. Our family wants to thank Kathi, Bobbi, Barbara, Nancy and Monica at St. Martin's along with the dining room staff, maintenance and every person who walked through the door. They all were attentive and loving, and they all helped to make our mother's life happy, safe and comfortable. We'd especially like to thank Dr. Harold Simon and Shikera McCoy and The Reverend Jennifer Riddle and The Reverend Deacon Kaki O'Flinn. In our mother's final days, the kind people at Optum Palliative and Hospice Care were our guides into a foggy and unfamiliar world. Every person on staff was understanding, professional, compassionate, loving and untiringly patient. Our gratitude to all of you is immeasurable. Instead of flowers, we invite you to go buy yourself a pair of hiking boots and use them! Thank you ... Janie, Mark, John and Pat
