Dorothy "Dottie" Putnam Norris Lang passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23rd 2024 in the evening in her home with her husband Thomas Rudolf Dietrich Lang, her son Brent Rudolf Norris Lang, and her daughter in law Marlena Rebecca Roberts Lang. She was the kindest person and was welcoming to any person she ever met. She was lovingly known to many as Aunt Dottie and enjoyed being with friends and family hosting gatherings during special times of the year.
Dorothy was born on April 10th, 1950 to her parents, Roy Hart Norris, Jr. and Dorothy Putnam Norris in Mountain Brook, Alabama and lived on Euclid Avenue. She grew up with her great friend, Kathleen Teresa Wood Luckey in the neighborhood and was a loving sister to her brother, Roy Hart Norris, III. Dorothy attended Auburn University and studied art and painting where she met Anne Claire Bagby Templin and became close fast friends. It was Anne who introduced her to her husband, Thomas. While at Auburn Dorothy participated in many protests on the college campus, one in particular stands out was the protest for women's right to wear pants on campus. She may or may not have also participated in the mysterious disappearance of Dean Katarine Cooper Caters ashtray. While dating Thomas, mom became close friends with Barbara Walker and Rodney Harbin where the 4 of them went on many camping trips around the South East.
After Dorothy's time at Auburn she moved back to Birmingham Alabama and married Thomas in November of 1974. It is here that she started her career at Williamson Marilyn Taylor and Darling and later became VP of Production at Gryphon Publishing. Thomas and Dorothy loved to travel with friends and family and spent time in Greece, Mexico, New Orleans, and Germany as well as trips with their newborn son. She later became office administrator to Dr. Max Cooper at Howard Hughes Medical Institute. While not working Dorothy loved to shop and host gatherings with friends and family over the years. She also loved to spend time on Lake Martin as well as their lake home on Smith Lake. One of her favorite things to do was sunbathe which was a constant pastime while at the beach down in Destin on occasion.
In retirement Dorothy enjoyed a quiet life with Thomas and moved out to Inverness from Homewood. There she spent time making floral arrangements as well as jewelry. One of her wishes was to see the Florida Keys which she was able to do with her dear friend Susan Brower.
Visitation for Dorothy will be held on Thursday, May 30th 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Rd, Homewood, AL 35209.
