Dorothy Giles Stevenson, a long-time resident of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on March 24, 2019. Born December 20, 1925 in Monroeville, Alabama as the youngest of seven children, Dolly grew up in Huntsville and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1943. From there she joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II as a nursing student at Duke University, graduating in 1946, and meeting her husband Edward W. Stevenson, whom she married in 1947. Dolly worked as a registered nurse from 1946 until 1956 in hospitals in Huntsville, Baltimore, Memphis, Norfolk, Richmond, and New Orleans as Ed pursued his medical training. Then, over the next 54 years, she undertook her true life's work and calling, becoming a devoted and nurturing mother to four daughters, being a supportive wife, providing a welcoming and warm home to family and friends, and devoting years of faithful service to her church and chosen civic organizations. Even after having a stroke in 2010, she continued to offer her love and affection to everyone she encountered through her unwavering warm and generous spirit. Dolly is survived by her husband, Edward W. Stevenson, M.D., her children, Sally Stevenson Yeilding (Ralph), Laura Stevenson Healy (Richard), Molly Stevenson Walker (Wally), eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren (so far), and niece Dolly Lankford Crewes. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Thomas H. Giles and Molly Ora Edens Giles, her six brothers and sisters, and her daughter Nancy Stevenson Schonberger. A service of remembrance of Dolly's life will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Monday, April 1 at 12:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11:00 in the church parlor. The family would like to express deep gratitude to her caregiver Donna Carroll. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the CV Research Fund at UAB, c/o R.
