Dot was born July 6, 1936 to the late Esby and Sarah Gibbons in Deatsville, Alabama. She graduated from Holtville High School in 1954 and completed her training as a nurse at St. Margret’s Hospital in Montgomery Alabama in 1957. She married James Allen (Jim) Bailey on March 23, 1958 at Pine Flat Church in Deatsville Alabama and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. After living in Cocoa, Florida and Huntsville, Alabama, she settled in Vestavia Hills where she lived since 1973.
After a career in nursing, Dot used her nursing skills by serving as a Red Cross volunteer and a school nurse. Her friends and family could always count on Dot to mend their scrapes and bruises. She was an enthusiastic friend and used her “take charge” nursing ways to help her friends and organize chaos. Visitors never left her home without something in their hand, even if it was a piece of candy.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Bailey; her son, Rusty Bailey; her sisters, Jenny Logan and Katherine Weldon; and her brother, Tom Gibbons; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her long haired dachshund grand dogs, Wally and Rupert.
In addition, Dot always looked forward to visits from Linda Bottoms, her visiting nurse, and her caregiver Loretta Baldwin.
A visitation will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel Funeral Home Saturday August 18th from 11:00am to 12:30pm. A graveside service will follow at 3:00pm at the cemetery at Pine Flat Church located at Highway 143, Deatsville Alabama. Rev. Mark E. Waldo, Jr. will officiate.
To honor Dot’s memory, the family requests memorials be directed to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (gbhs.org) or Big Oak Ranch (bigoak.org), in lieu of flowers. In the comments section, note in memory of Dot Bailey.
