He graduated from Cornell University and was very proud of being a “Cornell man.” He served with honor in Korea before his marriage to Betty Anne Davis Miller in 1957, a loving union that lasted 59 years before Betty Anne’s death in 2016. Their daughter, Ruth, predeceased Betty Anne. Sadly, both their sons, Brett and Van, predeceased their father.
Doug and Betty Anne set up housekeeping in Livingston, NJ, where Ruth and Brett were born, before moving to Birmingham in 1969 where their youngest son Van was born. Doug worked as a risk management consultant in the insurance industry, a career he continued well into his ‘80s. He and Betty Anne were stalwart members of the Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Birmingham where they were choir members and Betty Anne was a member of the award-winning hand bell choir.
Doug loved music, especially the older ballads. He had a lovely tenor voice and with a little encouragement would break into song at family gatherings. His family remembers him as a go-getter, always with a plan for the next big thing. His life was filled with difficulties yet he somehow managed to stay optimistic and hopeful.
He is survived by his nieces, Kris, Leigh, Elise, Judy, and Jennifer Joy, and by nephews Larry, Mark and Lee, as well as by his sister-in-law, Barbara Davis.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The graveside committal service will be private and will be followed by visitation at 1:00 pm and a memorial service at 2:00 pm, both at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Birmingham Chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Doug’s name.
