The memories I have of Gery and Fred go back to the time they met in Denmark. A remarkable happening that has lasted this long. Was at the wedding too, riding in a carriage.

My heart goes out to the whole family! Marijke

Fred was a great influence in my life. He was my initial interview with Samford and told me I needed to visit Samford and Birmingham before I decided where to take my first job as an academic at the age of 48. That was in 1993 and I have been at Samford since that time. It has been a life changing experience and 'made' my professional life. I thank Fred for that and will forever have gratitude for that.

I loved to hear the testaments from Fred's sons at his service last Friday. Fred would have been so proud to hear them speak.

Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed.

We have lived next door to Fred and Gery for more than 20 years and have been so fortunate to have such kind and thoughtful neighbors. Every holiday or special occasion, Gery is always the first to bring my children treats (and wine for us!). My favorite memory of Fred occurred when my son Charlie was about 3 years old. We evacuated the chipmunks from our old stone grill and made a fire to make smores. Charlie saw Fred outside and ran over shouting "Mr. Fred! Do you want some smores? He replies, "what are smores?. Steve walked over and said, "well we also have red wine" and Fred replied "why not both?" We've spent many hours listening to Fred and Gery's fabulous stories and tales of travels. We love you Fred! We love you Gery!
Peace and love, Ginger, Steve, Lexie and Charlie

A wonderful man whose “widget” was a bronze Ferrari with alligator upholstery, and if any man derved one, it was he. Class of 1982.

So much respect for your wonderful father. He was one of our best teachers at Samford University. My brother, Witold Turkiewicz and my sister Mary Turkiewicz Outlaw and I were all fortunate to have been taught by your father. He was such a smart and caring professor. I am Truly sorry for your loss. 🙏

Our friendship with Fred and Gery goes back to 1977 when we just arrived in Birmingham.
We discovered that Gery is also from Leiden, The Netherlands - it is a small world.
Fred, Gery and the boys made us feel at home in Birmingham by inviting us over to their home, and we stayed friends after we returned to Holland in 1980.
Several times we stayed with them when we took our children on vacations to Alabama and they came to visit us in Holland many times. We loved taking them on sightseeing trips because we always had a lot of fun.
Fred was a very friendly, intelligent man and had great humour!
Fred will be missed by us and we are thinking of his family and friends who will also miss him dearly.
We wish you all strength in these sad days.
