

Edith Hunt Stone, 89, passed from this life on July 31, 2012. Edith was born May 5, 1923 to Lillie Steele and Victor Andrew Hunt in Brent, Alabama. She graduated from Bibb County High School in 1940 and from Auburn University in 1944 with a degree in Home Economics Education. On June 15, 1944 Edith married Walt Stone just before he left for Europe to serve in World War II. While he was away, she lived with her parents and taught school in Bibb County. When he returned over two years later, Walt finished school at Auburn, and they traveled out West for a long-delayed honeymoon. Edith and Walt settled in Birmingham in 1952 and raised three sons.
Edith lived her life to serve her family and her community. She taught the third grade at Valley Elementary in Shelby County for eight years, served as a volunteer at Brookwood Hospital for 27 years and was an active member of Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church for 49 years.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Willis Walton Stone, her sisters Sara Christenberry of Montgomery and Betty Meigs of Brent, her sons Spencer Stone (Vicki) of Springville, Ken Stone (Sandy) of Minneapolis, and Jeff Stone (Linda) of Birmingham, as well as six grandchildren – Callie Stone Nash (Wilson), Lydia, Timothy, Walton, Molly and Norah Stone – and 18 nieces and nephews.
A special thanks goes to the special caregivers and Alacare nurses for their service and attention to Edith in the later years of her life.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4 at Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church with visitation at the church one hour before the service. Internment will be held at Lineville City Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church, 3139 Cahaba Heights Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35243.
