She attended public school there and then left to attend Livingston College. After college, Edith moved to Montgomery, AL where she met and married James L.Turnipseed, Sr. Edith was widowed at the age of 29, but did a wonderful job of raising their five children.
She was preceded in death by three of their children, Mary Jean Turnipseed of Montgomery, Helen Patricia Turnipseed of Macon, GA and Marion L. “Red” Turnipseed (Linda) of Clanton. She is survived by two of their children, James L. Turnipseed, Jr. (Lois) and Martha Shaw (Jim) all from Birmingham. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren whom she loved and adored.
While she lived in Montgomery raising their kids, she worked as a nurse for Dr. William Brannon for 32 years. She left Montgomery 23 years ago and moved to Birmingham to be near her family. Edith had a heart for service and volunteer work and she was happiest when she was doing something for someone else. She had a love for gardening and had a spot in her condo where she grew beautiful day lilies and iris. She was also an excellent seamstress, always willing to take up a pair of pants or hem a dress. She was an avid reader; she kept her book bag packed with books going and coming from the library. She was a life time contributor to Red Cross and they would often call her when there was a need for blood. We are so thankful for her caregivers for the last seven years Sharon Mims, Evarn Marshall, and Kimberly Marshall. They have become family to us and they treated Edith like she was their family.
A Memorial service will be held at the 1st Baptist Church of Birmingham, 2209 Lakeshore Dr., Homewood, AL 35209, on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 1:00PM. Visitation will begin prior at 12:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to the Baptist Children’s Home or to the charity of your choice.
