Eleanor Sample Sherrill Cushman, 88, of Mountain Brook, AL was born on July 26, 1932 and passed away peacefully on May 6, 2021. Eleanor was the daughter of the late James Douglas and Vivian Seals Sample and the youngest of their four daughters, Vivian Ferguson, Peggy Burnett and Jane Jones. Eleanor was married to William Earl Sherrill who passed away early in their marriage. They had two daughters. She is preceded in death by her oldest, Vivian Sherrill Hutto.
Eleanor attended Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, DC and Birmingham Southern
College. She was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church where she served on the Knitting Ministry. Her love of knitting began in the first grade, when she learned the technique of "casting-on", knitting and purling to make Afghan squares for the Red Cross to send overseas.
She was a member of the 1953 Debutante Club of Birmingham, the Junior League of
Birmingham, Linly Heflin Unit, Cambridge Study Club, Mint Makers, Harlequins Dance Club and Tremont and Rock Brook Garden Clubs. Eleanor was a true southern lady with an accent that charmed everyone who met her. She enjoyed sunsets at her family home on the Florida Panhandle and cruising around Lake Martin. She found joy in her life through her family, friends and her many beloved dogs.
Eleanor is survived by her husband of 53 years, Gene Moore Cushman and daughter Jane Sherrill Wade (Louis F. Jr.). She will be lovingly remembered as MaMere by her grandchildren Louis Frederick Wade Ill, William Sherrill Wade, Vivian Anne Hutto Moon (Dan) of
Melbourne, FL, Zachary Taylor Hutto and great -grandchildren, Caroline and Matthew Moon. Her stepchildren are Bonnie Smith Black (James) of Greensboro, NC, Mark Cushman (LaVerna) of Norman, OK and Stacy Cushman Conner (Paul) of Vestavia Hills, AL. Her life was full with 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
We would like to thank her many caregivers especially Lelia Faye Collier who has become a very special friend to the family over the years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 11 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Independent Presbyterian Church or the Linly Heflin Unit.
