Eleanor Lydia Sklenar (Ellie) passed away peacefully at her home on July 2, 2020. In her final days Ellie was surrounded by her loving husband, daughters and caregivers who had become part of the family. She was born on November 2, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of the late Paul and Irene Vincenz. She was married to Herbert A. Sklenar (Herb) on September 15, 1956. They settled in Parkersburg, West Virginia and lived in Boise, Idaho and Scottsdale, Arizona before making Birmingham their home. Along with her husband Herb, she is survived by her children Susan Sklenar and Patricia Morris (Tisha), her sisters Celeste Ledwidge and Rosalia Bergh, nieces, nephews and extended family. Ellie was preceded in death by her parents and youngest sister Marion Pyatt.
One of kind, Ellie never met a stranger and could light up any room. She had a fun loving spirit, infectious laugh and always enjoyed a good conversation. She loved her morning tea, reading a good book, gardening, bridge, and birthday gatherings with her friends, her weekly spa days, Alabama football and her evening ice cream treats. She had a keen eye for design and was exceptionally detailed and organized. Ellie enjoyed the arts, piano and traveling both domestically and internationally. She was an avid tennis player from early on and taught Tisha, Susan and Herb how to play and enjoy the sport.
Ellie was a nurturing mother to her children and a devoted, loving wife to her husband. She touched the lives of many people including total strangers. She will be remembered for her fun loving spirit, generosity, selfless giving, infectious laugh, wit, pleasant demeanor and love for her family and friends. Ellie will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know her. She was a strong person and always ready to “get her hands dirty” and take care of things.
Ellie’s family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Maldia for the care and compassion he provided for many years. A special thank you to our amazing caregivers Erica, Kiara and Lisa who demonstrated the utmost love, patience and compassion for our mother. Mom hated having her picture taken.
