Elizabeth Eleanor Barnard

Elizabeth "Betty" Barnard (née Purcell, formerly Skaggs) Age 90, of Vestavia Hills, AL. Passed away peacefully on Oct. 19, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Preceded in death by parents, Frederick and Florence Purcell, daughter, Ellen Sue Cohen, first husband, Thornton Dayne Skaggs, and stepson-in-law Roman Terleckyj. Survived by grandchildren Kelly Shelton (Jeff Sticha), Dayne Shelton (Susan), Emily Shelton (Bill Grau), and Sally Shelton (Tim Ensor); great-grandchildren Davis Shelton, Mary Grantham Shelton, Ruth Shelton-Grau, Forester Shelton, and Sarah Shelton-Grau; stepsons Greg Barnard and Scott Barnard (Lisa); step-grandchildren John Pavlica and Laura Leigh Pavlica; and ex-husband and friend, George R. Barnard. Betty will be remembered for her elegance, abiding love of her family, friends, and her dogs, her perseverance in trying times, joy for life, love of laughter, and capacity for forgiveness. Memorial service to be held Friday Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel at 1800 Oxmoor Road in Homewood. A reception to celebrate her life will follow in Edgewood Parlor.
